Workout For St. Jude Children's Research Hospital - Saturday, Feb 16th - UPDATE

Yes, he's in there. ^
My nephew, Matt, is heavily involved in raising money for sick kids through Penn State's THON, the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. For the last 2 years, on the same weekend, I’ve held a Workout for St. Jude at Body & Soul to also help seriously ill kids. This year is no different.

Unfortunately, Body & Soul can't hold that many so reserve your spot.

GROUP WORKOUT - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 16th 9:00 AM
(AND HOPEFULLY AT 10:00 AM, TOO)

Mark your calendar and join me for a fun and challenging group workout session.

Spread the word among your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers. I would love to be able to have enough people to warrant two sessions - one at 9:00 AM and one at 10:00 AM. You can help me make that happen.

Body & Soul members and friends have raised almost $10,700 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital since 2005. Not Exactly the $89+ million that PSU students have raised for THON but we do
pretty well for a small gym. :-)

Donation is $20 or $20 or more in sponsor donations. Sponsor sheets are available at Body & Soul Fitness Studio.

If you can't work out with us, please consider being a sponsor.

The workout will last approximately 45 minutes, including warmup and cooldown.

All fitness levels are invited. Exercises will be adapted or substituted, as necessary. Anyone 12 and older is welcome to participate.

HULA HOOP CONTEST - SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 17th 10:30 AM AND 11:00 AM

How long can you keep that hoop spinning? Put your core hooping skills to the test, have some fun, and support the good work at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Let's add to the Body & Soul donation this year by having some fun with hoops!

We'll be holding two contests. The first begins at 10:30 AM, and the second at 11:00 AM. The prize for each contest is a brand new, sparkly, handmade fitness hoop, valued at $35-$40! Contestants will have their hooping endurance challenged with a series of different moves. The last hooper spinning wins!

Cost to enter each contest is $10. Hoops will be provided for use during the contest - no need to bring your own - but you can if you have a favorite.

Space is limited for both the group workout and the hooping contests so, if possible, please let us know you'll be attending. Call Mickey at (717) 509-7777 to register or for more information. However, if you decide last minute that’s fine, too. Raising as much money as possible is obviously the goal!

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!

There will also be other activities like chair massage, tarot readings, etc. We’re still trying to coordinate some additional fun. You can take advantage of everything that weekend for a minimum donation of $35.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call me.

Collected Fitness Wisdom #54

Getting strong requires work and it's uncomfortable. If you try to remove the discomfort then you remove the work and if you remove the work, you remove the result.

The same goes for fat loss. It requires work. You WILL have to go up against your physical limitations from time to time. It WILL take some time.

~ Dax Moy

In the fitness world, there are many ways to get results. But the biggest question to answer is "Was this workout designed to just get me tired or was it designed to get me better?" No workout should be designed to just get you tired and sore. There should be a strategy, a reason and smart methods for the exercises that you choose. Movement quality should be a high priority in your workouts. If you are just moving to create fatigue then you are missing the point. Exercise can quickly become erratic when it's more about movement quantity and less about movement efficiency.

Here's an example: perform 100 squats, 100 push-ups and 100 crunches and do 5 rounds. Think this workout will make you sweat, sore and burn some calories? Absolutely! Will this workout improve your movement, give you a higher level of performance and improve your athleticism? Absolutely not!

So as you embark on your fitness goals and decide on your fitness routines, have smart judgement on what you decide to commit to. You will end up feeling better, get bigger results and in the end change your life!

Be smart and do it better in 2013!

~ Justin Levine

If you have two choices, choose the harder. If you’re trying to decide whether to go out running or sit home and watch TV, go running. Probably the reason this trick works so well is that when you have two choices and one is harder, the only reason you’re even considering the other is laziness. You know in the back of your mind what’s the right thing to do, and this trick merely forces you to acknowledge it.

~ Paul Graham

Observing the typical gym workout can range from mildly amusing to something that's just horrifying, like watching people attempt to perform surgical procedures on themselves after taking in a few episodes of Gray’s Anatomy.
